Behind the Prompt — A New Series for Navigating AI

A strategic field guide for leading with AI.

Hey there,

Over the past year, I’ve had a lot of conversations with senior leaders trying to make sense of AI in the context of real business decisions. Questions like:

What should we invest in?

What’s safe to cut?

What actually moves the needle?

One theme keeps showing up: It’s not the AI tools that are confusing. It’s the uncertainty around how to use them well and how to lead with clarity when both the market and the technology are evolving so fast.

That’s why I’m creating a new series called Behind the Prompt.

It’s written for people who want more than hearing the AI trend recaps or product POCs. If you're looking for clear strategy, efficient ways to work with AI, and a practical way to lead your teams, this series is for you.

Each issue is a short briefing built around one high-impact topic, including:

  • What’s actually happening inside a language model and why that matters for trust, control, and ROI.

  • How to tell the difference between agents and workflows, so you don’t fund the wrong kind of “intelligence”.

  • What prompting looks like when it’s used as a leadership tool to think clearly, align teams, and make faster decisions.

  • Where GenAI is already delivering real value in business and where it’s quietly failing.

  • A decision filter to help you separate what’s truly worth developing from what’s just nice to have.

Each piece is designed to be useful — whether you’re preparing for a board conversation, refining a strategy or roadmap, or trying to make progress with your teams.

The first issue drops soon. If you’re already subscribed, you’re all set. If you’re new here, feel free to join the Next Step Newsletter.

Stay tuned,
Weiwei
